Leadership and Creative Autonomy

I’m pondering leadership. ‘Task’ oriented delegation can stifle the creativity that would otherwise come from ‘objective’ delegation.

Maybe that’s confused you. In much more eloquent words Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, the French aviator and author of “The Little Prince”, wrote,

If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up the men to gather wood, divide the work and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea.

Of course, a leader needs to give orders, but more importantly he or she should enthuse the team with the vision and give them creative sway in it’s fulfilment. Ownership is loyalty.

Here’s a looong but fascinating video from RSA with insight on what motivates and engages us – RSA Animate – Drive.
